Who We Are
Sea Farmer Foundation is a Jamaica-based organization committed to restoring marine ecosystems while empowering coastal communities. Through innovative, sustainable practices, we bridge the gap between environmental conservation and economic development, creating a future where healthy oceans and thriving communities coexist.
Our Mission
Our mission is to restore Jamaica’s coral reefs and mangroves, promote sustainable marine practices, and support the livelihoods of local communities through eco-friendly initiatives like Irish moss cultivation and marine biodiversity conservation.
Our Vision
We envision a world where vibrant marine ecosystems support resilient coastal communities, sustainable livelihoods, and a healthier planet for generations to come.
Our Story
Founded by Matthew Lee in response to the alarming decline of Jamaica’s coral reefs, Sea Farmer Foundation was born from a passion for marine conservation and a commitment to community development. Witnessing firsthand the impacts of climate change and unsustainable practices, we set out to create a model where environmental restoration and economic growth go hand in hand.
What We Do
Our work is centered around five key activities:
Partnering with Local Fish Sanctuaries
We collaborate with local fish sanctuaries to protect marine biodiversity, strengthen conservation efforts, and promote sustainable fishing practices.
Providing Equipment and Education for Irish Moss Cultivation
We equip and train local communities in sustainable Irish moss farming, fostering economic growth and environmental stewardship.
Purchasing and Selling Irish Moss
We buy high-quality Irish moss from local growers at fair market prices and connect them to broader markets locally and internationally.
Reinvesting Revenue into Environmental Projects
Revenue from Irish moss sales funds transformative environmental restoration projects, creating a sustainable cycle of economic and ecological benefits.
Restoring Coral Reefs and Mangroves
We actively restore and protect Jamaica’s coral reefs and mangroves using innovative, eco-friendly practices to enhance biodiversity and climate resilience.
Our Impact
Since our inception, we’ve partnered with multiple fish sanctuaries, trained over 100 local farmers in sustainable Irish moss cultivation, and contributed to the restoration of coral reefs and mangroves across Jamaica’s coastline.
